REFLECTION UNIT 8

Finally, it comes to the last unit 8. The last unit in my critical literacy subject. Furthermore, in this last unit I had produce one assignment titled “Burning Out At Nine’” and also done critique reading 8.1 ‘drugs or guns’. To extent my feeling on this subject, in my last assignment I was given an opportunities to give an opinion and critique others students work. Even though I not perfectly good in producing a good element but in this last assignment I felt like I was a lecturer for critical literacy. And for this experience also make me realize and gained new way of producing 10 elements to polish up my entire mistake.

There is no difficulty on checking others student worked but I have a problem to understand the elaboration given and the grammatical error done by that student. In the reading 8.1 I learned that this article given is focusing on the issue of the South African government under the leadership of Thebo Mbeki who has to confront with two different serious agendas; the dissemination of drugs or the guns. In detail, the article covers the issues of the antiretroviral drugs for HIV positive pregnant women and the arms deal which the government has to choose for the betterment of the citizens but the text is too long and I need a plenty of time to understand.

The last presentation group give a good presentation with briefly explanation.
REFLECTION UNIT 7

Unit 7 is simple unit but has lots of text to read. This unit I was required to produce and evaluate critical writing. This unit has a lot of figure and advises included in the text. The reading that is focused in this unit is ‘Dieting: a waist is a terrible thing to mind’. This topic is quite interesting for everybody because this text teach the reader how to keep their health by the correct way of eating. It vice versa with my cerebration in the first time because I think this text is to teach someone in dieting and in the text also mentioned that the writer condemn on diet product.

The reading 7.1 is quite lengthy for me to read. It is difficult for people like me who are lazy to read long text and make me bored. There are lots of scientific medical term been used and the figure shows is difficult for to understand because it have lots of number and icon that in my opinion only can be understand by people who care about their diet.

i think the group presentation is quite good. They can give a brief explanation and give some example to make sure that we can understand it.

REFLECTION UNIT 5

For unit 5, interesting information that was found is:

Analytical Exposition

Hortatory

  • Persuades that
  • Typical of lectures, seminars, scholarly papers, essay writing and exam answer.
  • Tend to be written.
  • It is function to persuade people that some judgement is correct, feelings and attitudes hardly occur.
  • Persuades to
  • Commonly found in editorial, letters, political speeches and debates.
  • Spoken.
  • Tries to persuade people to do something is more like spoken languages, number of feelings and attitudes or express.

The difficulties in this unit is about the concepts of Heterogenous : Diverse, a mixture of different elements. For example in Reading 5.1, “Government endorsement of a narcotic meant to help heroin addicts is, in fact, condemning many to a life of misery and even death”.

In this week, the group presentation will present clearly about the interesting and difficulties in unit 5. They give some example which is make me understand and I have got the point clearly.

REFLECTION UNIT 4

I was found Reading 4.1 as an interesting information. Arguments given about “Body Language That Speaks to Muggers” provide together with the evidence. In addition, Reading 4.5 was interesting. Crooked and Fallacious is also a manipulative tools in the hand of writers wishing to influence an affect the judgment of their readers. It is the way to attract the reader.

Overall, there is no difficulties in understanding all the concept/ task/ terminology in this unit, but, it takes time to proof that the arguments can be classified as hard evidence or not.

For unit 4, the presentation group has no problem to explain this unit. They can give clearly and briefly explanation. They also give some example to make sure we are understood what they want to present.

REFLECTION UNIT 3

In unit 3, the rest of the unit will clarify my ability to recognize and identify elements of positioning. This unit I was learnt how to know and understand the writer construct the people in the text. For unit 3 there are practice text 3.1 titled ‘please let me go to your school’ and portfolio 3.2 titled ‘truth about youth’ is the practice for me to make my understanding in positioning better. For reading 3.1 the writer position that scarlet finney is very unfortunate and the writer sympathized her just because she is handicap and don’t have an opportunity to enter the school when the school bring up the reason that they don’t have enough financial to built more facilities to handicap. And in reading 3.2 article is informing the readers especially teenagers in Australia. The writer supports the stance taken by stating the fact of the issues from the survey result. This shows that the writer is trying to be neutral by just stating the result from the article, but he has his own agenda, that is trying to convey the messages that might help the teenagers to overcome the situation

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

For reading 3.3, I was bringing in to develop the linguistic tools and the new elements such as genre, field, tenor, mode, ideology. The writer gives many examples and it makes it easier to understand. But in reading 3.4, the text is too long and it sometimes make me confused even though this text is construct to make people to understand more about this process. It hard for me to cope with the text because I need to think and read repeatedly to identify the meaning of positioning.

For group presentation in this week, they are good in present and i can understand very well.

UNIT 2

I was found that “Text and Textualities” as an interesting information. The topic tells me about what is text. Text means a combination of signs and signs link together. I totally understand in this topic because the writer uses a simple word and give some example for each explanation like sign was such meaning for various groups of people in various social contexts. For example, words “herb” or “weed”. It brought different meaning to weekend gardeners than to fans of reggae music.

Based on reading 2.2, that is about “Language, Perspective, Ideology”. The topic hard to understand because the writer explains about linguistic features. To interpret these features we need to understand how they interact. The writer also uses the words which unfamiliar for me like metonymy, metaphor, euphemism, diachronic perspective and so on. I must read more than twice to make sure that I really understand about this topic.

For article “battling the bullies” it’s not hard to understand. When I see the headline and the picture, I can guess what the writer want to tell the readers. The text is clear and gives some explanation about the bullies. It is good for the readers especially for students because in this article the writer also put opinion from Dr. Darryl Cross as educational psychologists. The language that use in this article is normal as long as people can understand all of the information. When I read the article, I know that bullies are some serious case which happens in this world. In addition, the language used in this article is concrete enough to show that bullies are a big and serious issue to the readers.

This week, the group presentation actually has some problems. They cannot understand this topic and it make they cannot give a strong explanation. But they still try to present and hope people still can understand what they want to tell them. They use a simple language and also they put an example in their explanation.

reflection on blog (unit 1)

For critical literacy subject, in topic one it’s contain reading 1.1 “convicted killer”, reading 1.2 Martin (1987) “stories and fact” and reading 1.3 Fowler and Kress (1979) “rules and regulations”. Based on unit 1 readings, the information about stories and fact is interesting. It is learn how to make writing in details. The writer gives brief and clear information in this topic. It is easy to understand with simple words and many of examples.

In unit reading 1 also have difficult topic to understand. Reading 1.3 about rules and regulation hard to understand because the writer gives a long explanation and some words also hard to understand. For examples, swimming club rules. It is contains such as declaratives, imperative, circumlocution and passive decorative. The readers take a long time to finish their reading and to understand all about the rules.

For the article “convicted killer back at work”, I cannot fully understand for the first time I read. But when I read rather than once and also doing for portfolio task, I can understand about the article and I get some information about this topic. Maybe for first time I read, I just skimming and find the main idea. But for the second time, I read more specific to do the portfolio and I must to get the details information such as topic, content, source, audience, rhetorical function, purpose, perspective, positioning, impact and visual literacy. After I read the article and do the portfolio, I learn something that I must read more details to get information and it can make me fully understand.

For the first presentation group, even the points that they give it is not have a lot of explanation but I still got the point that they try to give us. Beside that, they use a simple word and easy for me to understand.
